How do you describe your artistic style/perspective? How do you define success as an artist? What do you find most rewarding about being an artist? What are some of the most important skills you draw upon to create your work? What are some of the most significant things you've learned through art-making?
My artistic style is more perspective drawings with lots lines and dimension. I really enjoyed the perspective unit with all the practicing because I never realized how important perspective lines were until then and I loved the outcome of all my buildings and cities I practiced with. I define my success as an artist when I finish my work and am proud of how it turned out by trusting the process. I find giving my art to others is most rewarding because of how happy my friends and family get when they see how proud I am of my work. Important skills I drew upon to created my work were how to use variations of values, correct perspectives, and sizing/proportions compared to other aspects in the piece. One of the most significant things I have learned through art making was trial and error. I really had to be patient with myself when it came to brainstorming, compositional sketches, and finalizing my ideas. While being patient with the process I would take extra time to really add details with values within the piece which I had never done before till this class and it really adds so much to my work.
Look at your body of work over the semester and choose 2 pieces that show your growth as an artist. Discuss each piece and how you grew in the following areas: application of materials, techniques and skills, artistic vision, use of the principles and elements, creativity, intuition and subject matter.
The two pieces of artwork that I am able to see my growth the most are my self portrait I did at the being of the class and my self portrait from the end. For my first self portrait I had no idea how to draw any feature, correct preparations, and values. I hadn't had any practice before because I had only taken one art class and it was online. I didn't put any detail into my features because I didn't know how to. With the time in between these pieces I have had lots of opportunities to practice and master each aspect that goes into my self portrait. In my second self portrait I did many trial and error with how to draw each feature to learn technique. I was able to practice how to apply each material with the pencils to add value and dimension to my face. With all the practice I was to be more creative and had more of a vision with my second piece while still using all the principles and elements.
Reflect on what your portfolio (all work you created through semester) may not reveal about the semester. Do you think the work in your portfolio is an accurate reflection of your development in the class?
My portfolio accurately reflects my development with this art class. My portfolio is a very organized way of showing all the step I have taken to create each of my final products. From the beginning of the semester to the end of the semester I have kept my portfolio up to date showing everything that I have done. By doing this I can go back and see how far I have come comparing then and now pieces. I have all my major projects on my portfolio with progress photos throughout. This way am able to see how I achieved my final products for each project. I show all my step by steps of how I created each piece with my brainstorming, compositional sketches, and final. At the end of each major project I have reflections on how I felt about each project and the outcome. I really like going back and seeing how I started and how far I have come with everything I have learned. I have learned how to use so many materials and techniques in many different ways to add so much to each piece. My portfolio lets me see how much I have grown in art within my portfolio.
Discuss one project where you felt you were the least successful. Explain why you felt this way. What would you do differently to change this piece? Explain.
The project I felt least successful in was my Fruity Pebble drawing. I picked the idea to draw a bag of Fruity Pebbles cereal with it spilling into a bowl for the topic "Look What I Can See Through". I really liked my idea and taking composition photos but I underestimated how hard it was going to be. This was my first major project I did with prisma colors and had a hard time creating values with each shade. I had some practice before with creating lighting points and shadows to create a shear/clear look but wasn't super comfortable with using color. My original idea I was going to put a gallon of milk in the background but had a very hard time adding the lighting casts on top of the white milk. I ended up changing my mind to putting the cereal box in instead. I really liked how the box came out but didn't have enough room to add much shadows to create more dimension for the box. I was able to fix it by cover the majority of the background with the cereal bag. What I would do differently to change the piece next time would be making the cereal flow more out of the bag. I would practice more with the shading and pre-planning the order I was going to draw everything. Overall I am very proud of this piece even though it had lots of obstacles to get passed.
